Crusader and Ayyubid Period
In the 12th century the Crusaders built castles east of the Jordan – Shobak in 1115 and Karak in 1142 – to control the road between Syria and Egypt, with two smaller forts at Petra. Saladin’s forces took Karak in 1188 and Shobak in 1189. In the north, his commander had already built Ajloun Castle in 1184.
