Through the Gates of Shobak Castle

SHARE

The 360 panorama at Shobak Castle captures the dramatic entrance gate of this isolated Crusader fortress, where massive weathered stone walls rise above the rugged hills of southern Jordan. The imposing gate, once part of the castle’s original dog-legged triple entrance system, reveals layers of Crusader and later Mamluk architecture, with narrow passageways designed for defence and control. From the gateway, visitors can admire sweeping views across the surrounding valleys and ancient trade routes that the fortress once guarded. The textured stone arches, worn stairways, and traces of medieval masonry create a powerful atmosphere, transporting viewers back to the 12th century when Shobak—then known as Montreal—stood as one of the Kingdom of Jerusalem’s most strategic strongholds.
