North Gate and the Upper Cardo Maximus, Jerash: A 360° View

SHARE

At the northern end of ancient Gerasa, this 360-degree panorama places the North Gate at the centre of a broad, sunlit threshold between the Roman city and modern Jerash. The carefully reconstructed limestone gateway rises above its blocked central arch, with its classical mouldings, flanking niches and carved façade standing sharply against a deep blue sky. In front, the worn paving of the upper Cardo Maximus spreads across the foreground, its large stone slabs softened by dry grass and small weeds—an evocative reminder that this was once the main street leading south through the city. Turning left, the Cardo continues among low ruins and the distant line of surviving columns; turning right, the terrain falls away toward trees, roads and the modern town. The panorama captures a striking contrast: the monumental Roman entrance is still firmly present, yet it now stands quietly at the edge of the archaeological site, with the living city of Jerash visible immediately beyond it.
