Nymphaeum of Jerash: A 360° Panorama

SHARE

From the Nymphaeum, the 360-degree panorama opens onto one of Jerash’s grandest stretches of the Cardo Maximus. The monumental fountain dominates one side of the view, its broad curved steps, richly carved façade and soaring Corinthian columns rising above the ancient paving. Turning along the avenue, an immense colonnaded perspective runs into the heart of Gerasa, while the other side reveals low walls, fallen architectural fragments and the remains of the city’s busy commercial and civic quarter. The worn limestone slabs beneath your feet lead the eye toward the distant modern town, creating a remarkable contrast between the living city and the Roman ruins. Although the fountain no longer runs, the setting still conveys its original effect: a magnificent public water monument placed at the centre of a bustling, sunlit avenue of columns and stone.
