A Four-Way Gateway Through Roman Jerash: A 360° View

SHARE

Standing inside the North Tetrapylon, this 360-degree panorama makes its role as a Roman crossroads immediately clear. Massive limestone piers and rounded arches frame views in every direction, turning the structure into a monumental four-way gateway rather than a simple arch. Through the central opening, the Cardo Maximus stretches away in a long perspective of paving and columns, while the side arches open onto the North Decumanus and the quieter northern sector of ancient Gerasa. The warm stone ceiling and heavy masonry create a moment of shade around the visitor, contrasting with the bright blue sky and sunlit ruins beyond. Look closely at the blocks, mouldings and worn paving underfoot: together they show how this monument was designed to control movement, frame views and give everyday travel through the city an unmistakably ceremonial character.
