Khazali Canyon, Wadi Rum: 360° Panorama

Share

Step into Khazali Canyon, where the panorama narrows beneath a sculpted sandstone ceiling and towering, red-brown walls. A wooden walkway leads through the shaded passage, while openings at either end frame the bright desert beyond. The canyon’s layered rock surfaces glow in warm amber tones, shaped by wind, water, and time. Look closely along the walls to find ancient petroglyphs and Thamudic inscriptions, including carved human figures, animals, and symbols. These weathered markings turn the canyon into a gallery of desert history, set within the cool shelter of the gorge. Khazali Canyon combines Wadi Rum’s dramatic natural forms with traces of the people who travelled through this landscape long ago.

Follow the walkway through the narrow opening, then look upwards to see how the rock encloses the passage. Compare the darker surfaces inside the canyon with the bright sandstone beyond its ends. The carved markings deserve a slower look, especially where weathering makes their outlines less distinct. Their placement within the gorge is as interesting as the individual figures. Turning between the walls and the openings helps establish how this sheltered space sits within the much broader desert. The panorama encourages observation without requiring every inscription to be read or interpreted from the image.
