Church of St. George: Spiritual Echoes from the 6th Century

Share

The Church of St. George at Khirbet al-Mukhayyat, Jordan, is a significant Byzantine-era site situated atop the ancient town of Nebo’s acropolis. Constructed in 536 AD during the tenure of Bishop Elias of Madaba, this church exemplifies early Christian architectural design. Its floor was adorned with intricate mosaics, showcasing the artistry of the period. Although the church now lies in ruins, the remnants of its mosaic floors have been preserved and are currently displayed in the access area to the Mount Nebo Memorial, offering insights into the region’s rich religious and cultural heritage.

Khirbet al-Mukhayyat has revealed multiple Byzantine churches, underscoring its historical importance as a religious centre. The Church of St. George, along with other nearby structures, reflects the area’s prominence during the Byzantine period. Ongoing archaeological excavations continue to uncover artefacts and architectural elements, further illuminating the site’s extensive history and its role in the broader context of early Christian settlements in Jordan.
