Church of Saint George

The Church of St. George at Khirbet al-Mukhayyat in Jordan stands as a notable example of early Byzantine Christian architecture. Perched atop the ancient acropolis of the town of Nebo, the church was built in 536 AD during the time of Bishop Elias of Madaba. Though now in ruins, it once featured beautifully crafted mosaic floors that reflected the artistic sophistication of the period. These mosaics have been carefully preserved and are now on display at the entrance to the Mount Nebo Memorial, providing a window into the region’s spiritual and cultural past.

Khirbet al-Mukhayyat is home to several Byzantine-era churches, highlighting its significance as a religious hub during the early Christian era. The Church of St. George, alongside neighboring ecclesiastical remains, points to the area’s vibrant religious community and architectural development. Ongoing archaeological work continues to reveal new findings, enriching our understanding of this historic site’s role within the broader narrative of Christianity in Jordan.
