A 360° View along the Cardo Maximus

SHARE

From the Cardo Maximus, the 360-degree panorama places you at the centre of ancient Gerasa’s great collonaded avenue. In both directions, the wide limestone paving stretches toward the horizon between long rows of columns, creating the powerful, almost cinematic perspective for which Jerash is famous. Around you stand the weathered remains of shops, porticoes, carved stone blocks and the bases of the South Tetrapylon, whose monumental corner structures once marked this important crossroads. The paved street beneath your feet is worn, fractured and beautifully irregular, carrying the physical memory of centuries of traffic and movement. Turn toward the east and west, and the avenue opens onto dense fields of ruins, with the modern city of Jerash beyond; look along its full length, and the columns lead the eye through a Roman cityscape framed by golden stone, distant hills and an immense blue Jordanian sky.
