Qasr Deir Al-Kinn

Qasr Deir al-Kinn is an ancient site located in northern Jordan, approximately 2.2 kilometres from the Syrian border. Situated on a plateau in the northeastern basalt region at the southeastern edge of the Hauran, the site offers strategic views over the surrounding landscape. The region is characterized by extensive prehistoric basalt flows, indicative of its volcanic origins.

The site’s historical significance is underscored by its proximity to a vital military road that once connected the southern oasis fortress of Qasr al-Azraq to other key locations. While the exact origins of Deir al-Kinn remain a subject of ongoing research, some scholars suggest that it may have been established or repurposed as a monastery during certain periods.  Today, the remnants of Qasr Deir al-Kinn offer valuable insights into the region’s complex history, reflecting its role in both military and religious contexts over the centuries.
