Qasr Al-Qastal Mosque: 360° Panorama

Share

This 360° panorama stands at the mosque of Qasr Al-Qastal, in the village of Al-Qastal about 25 km south of Amman. Long taken for a Roman fort, Qastal is one of the earliest Umayyad settlements in Jordan, probably begun under Caliph Abd al-Malik (685–705). The mosque stands just north of the palace.

It is a rectangular building, turned slightly off the direction of Mecca. Its original rectangular mihrab was later replaced by a semicircular one. Beside it rises the round minaret, with a spiral staircase inside. It is one of the earliest surviving minarets and is contemporary with the palace.

The minaret and the mosque have both been restored, and the mosque reopened for daily prayers. Turn slowly around to see the building and the minaret from the inside.
