Nestled in the lush forests of Jerash, Al Ma’wa for Nature and Wildlife is one of Jordan’s most remarkable conservation projects. Established through a partnership between the Princess Alia Foundation and the Four Paws International organisation, this sanctuary was created to provide a safe and natural home for rescued wild animals. Many of its residents were victims of war, smuggling, or exploitation in circuses and private zoos across the region and beyond. Al Ma’wa offers them a second chance to live in peace, surrounded by nature and proper care.
The sanctuary covers hundreds of hectares of forested land, designed to recreate natural habitats for the animals it shelters. Lions, tigers, bears, and other rescued species roam in spacious enclosures where they are free from suffering and cruelty. The project not only focuses on animal welfare but also plays an important role in environmental education and ecotourism in Jordan. Visitors can take guided tours, learn about the animals’ stories, and understand the importance of wildlife protection.
Experience Al Ma’wa Guided Tour
A one-hour guided tour at Al Ma’wa for Nature and Wildlife takes visitors on an educational and inspiring journey through the sanctuary’s grounds. The tour begins with a short introduction by a trained guide, who explains the mission of the centre, its partnership with the Princess Alia Foundation and Four Paws International, and the importance of rescuing and rehabilitating wild animals. Visitors are introduced to the stories of the sanctuary’s residents.
As the walk continues, guests follow a trail through forested enclosures designed to resemble natural habitats. Along the way, the guide highlights the unique behaviours and characteristics of each animal, pointing out how they adapt to their new environment. The tour emphasises animal welfare, explaining the challenges of rescue operations and the careful care each animal receives. Throughout the visit, there are opportunities for questions, photographs, and reflection, making the experience both engaging and deeply moving. The hour concludes with a message of conservation and compassion, leaving visitors with a sense of connection to wildlife and the role Jordan plays in protecting it.
Location, Access, Facilities and Fees

Visitors have the option to park under the shade of trees next to the Visitor Centre, where they can enjoy the facilities while waiting for the bus that transports them to the sanctuary entrance.
The facilities include a Visitor Centre where guests can learn about the sanctuary’s history, the rescue stories of its animals, and the importance of conservation. Additionally, there is a coffee shop and basic amenities such as parking and restrooms to ensure a comfortable experience. Educational spaces are available for workshops, school visits, and awareness programs, supporting the sanctuary’s mission of environmental education. There is also a small playground for children and a rest area.
Al Ma’wa for Nature and Wildlife is open daily from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM and is closed on Mondays.
