Discover the rich history and natural beauty of northern Jordan on this private day tour from Amman. Combining some of the country’s most remarkable archaeological sites with its greenest landscapes, this journey offers a refreshing and immersive experience beyond the typical tourist trail.

Your adventure begins at Jerash, one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the world. Walk along its collonaded streets, explore grand temples, theatres, and plazas, and experience the scale and sophistication of Roman urban life at its peak.

Continue into the scenic highlands of Ajloun, a region known for its mild climate and forested hills of oak, pine, and carob trees. Here, you’ll visit Ajloun Castle, a striking 12th-century fortress built by the forces of Saladin. Perched on a hilltop, the castle offers sweeping views and a fascinating look into medieval Islamic military architecture.

Along the way, discover layers of history that span civilisations—from Roman and Byzantine remains to sites associated with the Prophet Elijah, adding a spiritual and cultural dimension to your journey.

Your tour concludes at Pella, one of Jordan’s most significant archaeological sites. Overlooking the Jordan Valley, Pella reveals a continuous story of human settlement from the Neolithic period through the Greco-Roman, Byzantine, and early Islamic eras. Wander through its peaceful ruins and uncover a timeline of history set against a beautiful natural backdrop.

Tour Itinerary

Amman - Jerash

Your experience begins with pickup from your hotel or residence in Amman, where we will have a brief introduction and tour overview. Before leaving the city, we can make a quick stop at Starbucks so you can pick up your favourite coffee and snacks (included in the price). Relax during the comfortable one-hour drive (approximately 50 km) to Jerash in a luxury vehicle equipped with Wi-Fi and phone chargers. Enjoy your coffee and snacks while taking in the scenery along the way. Complimentary bottled water and soft drinks are also provided for your comfort.

Jerash

Widely regarded as one of the largest and best-preserved Roman cities outside Italy, Jerash is a remarkable showcase of ancient urban life and architectural grandeur. Its collonaded streets, monumental arches, temples, and theatres offer an immersive journey into the height of the Roman Empire. Yet Jerash is more than just an archaeological site—it is a city with a powerful story of resilience. Shaped by prosperity, decline, earthquakes, and rediscovery, it has been “lost” and revived multiple times throughout history. Today, its ruins still inspire awe, standing as a testament to the endurance of human civilisation. Walking through Jerash is like stepping back in time, where every stone tells a story. The site continues to live on not only through its ruins but also through cultural events such as the Jerash Festival of Culture and Arts, which brings music, performance, and life back into this ancient city each year. A visit to Jerash is not just sightseeing—it’s an encounter with one of the most captivating and enduring legacies of the ancient world.

Ajloun Castle

Perched high above the surrounding forests, Ajloun Castle is a striking example of Islamic military architecture. Built between 1184 and 1188 by the nephew of Saladin, it played a key role in defending the region against Crusader incursions. At the visitor centre, you’ll have time to refresh before exploring the castle itself. Walk through its halls, towers, and passageways while learning about its strategic design and layered history, including later Mamluk enhancements. A small on-site museum showcases artefacts from the region, and a short walk around the outer walls offers beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

Tell Mar Elias

This peaceful hilltop site is traditionally associated with the Prophet Elijah (Elias), revered in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Explore the remains of two Byzantine churches, including a larger complex reached via a short climb, offering sweeping views over Ajloun’s green hills. The colourful ribbons tied to nearby trees reflect the site’s continued spiritual significance for pilgrims today.

Listeb Mosque

Enjoy a brief stop at this small historic mosque, offering a glimpse into the region’s more recent cultural and religious heritage as you continue your journey.

Jesus Cave

Pause at a quiet and lesser-known site believed by local tradition to have sheltered Jesus and his followers. Nearby, you’ll also find one of the oldest preserved Roman olive presses in Jordan—an unexpected and fascinating highlight.

Pella

Overlooking the Jordan Valley, Pella is one of Jordan’s most significant and continuously inhabited archaeological sites, with history stretching back to the Neolithic period (around 6500 BC). Wander through its expansive ruins and discover layers of civilisations—from Bronze Age settlements to Greco-Roman and Byzantine remains. Highlights include a Roman theatre, bathhouse, nymphaeum, and several Byzantine churches. An optional lunch at a local restaurant (not included) offers a chance to relax while enjoying stunning views of the valley and surrounding hills.

Return to Amman

After a day rich in history, culture, and scenic beauty, relax on the drive back to Amman. You’ll be dropped off at your hotel, bringing a smooth and memorable conclusion to your journey through northern Jordan’s hidden treasures.

Wonderful tour with great company
We had a really wonderful trip with Alex, who is an excellent guide and host. We enjoyed the modern comforts of his Tesla, a Starbucks to get us going and interesting and cultured company throughout the day. He took great care of us in the soaring heat, minimising walking where needed, frequently checking in on us and making sure we were hydrated/ stocked up on snacks. Moreover the knowledge Alex has gained around the sites and titbits of information gave us good knowledge of what we were looking at, without being a typical “tour” as we were all genuinely interested in the history/sites.

We had a blast with Alex
This was our best day in Amman! After visiting the Dead Sea and Petra we had a day to spare in Jordan and decided to visit Ajloun Castle and Pella ruins. It was a great tour, packed with things to see and enjoy. Alex was feeding us all the way:) and internet in his car was a great additional service. Jesus cave was very interesting to see, that was a very nice stop as well. We had fish at the restaurant in Pella after walking through Roman ruins and enjoyed a fantastic view from the terrace. I highly recommend this tour, it was amazing!
