Shaumari Wildlife Reserve

Established in 1975 by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN), the Shaumari Wildlife Reserve is a 22-square-kilometer sanctuary near Azraq, approximately 100 kilometres east of Amman. Initially created as a breeding centre for endangered and locally extinct species, the reserve has played a pivotal role in reintroducing wildlife such as the Arabian oryx, Somali ostriches, Persian onagers, and various gazelle species to their native habitats. The RSCN’s efforts, in collaboration with international partners, have been instrumental in these conservation successes.

Visitors to Shaumari can engage in guided safaris to observe these animals in their natural environment, gaining insights into the region’s biodiversity and conservation initiatives. The reserve also serves as a centre for scientific research, offering opportunities for studies on arid land ecology and wildlife behaviour. Through its conservation and educational endeavours, Shaumari Wildlife Reserve stands as a testament to Jordan’s commitment to preserving its natural heritage.
