Ghwayr

Located in the dramatic landscapes of Jordan’s Faynan region, the Ghwayr archaeological site is one of the country’s most significant Pre-Pottery Neolithic settlements, dating to approximately 9,000–7,500 BC. Hidden among the rugged valleys and seasonal waterways of Wadi Faynan, Ghwayr preserves evidence of some of the earliest farming communities in the southern Levant, reflecting the pivotal shift from nomadic hunting and gathering to settled agricultural life. Archaeological excavations have revealed mudbrick dwellings, storage structures, stone tools, and traces of early water management systems, demonstrating the ingenuity and adaptability of its inhabitants in an arid environment. Remains of domesticated plants and animals suggest a mixed economy based on farming and herding, while the site’s strategic location near fertile land and natural water sources helped sustain long-term settlement. Today, Ghwayr offers a remarkable glimpse into prehistoric human innovation and the foundations of organised community life in ancient Jordan.
