Qal’at Zizia

The Ottoman Hajj Fort of Qal’at Zizia, located south of Amman, Jordan, is a well-preserved 17th-century fortress built along the historic Hajj route. Constructed by the Ottoman Empire, it served as a crucial military outpost and resting station for pilgrims travelling from Damascus to Mecca. The fort provided protection, shelter, and logistical support for the massive annual caravans making the arduous journey across the desert.

Featuring thick stone walls, defensive towers, and an internal courtyard, Qal’at Zizia reflects typical Ottoman military architecture. The site offers a glimpse into the infrastructure of pilgrimage routes and the Ottoman efforts to safeguard travellers. Today, the fort stands as a reminder of Jordan’s rich Islamic heritage and its role in facilitating one of the most important religious journeys in history.
