Karak Castle

Karak Castle, also known as Crac des Moabites, is one of the largest and best-preserved Crusader castles in the Levant. Perched dramatically on a hilltop in the city of Al-Karak, the fortress dominates the surrounding valleys and trade routes. Built in the 1140s by the Crusaders, it later passed through Ayyubid and Mamluk’s hands, reflecting layers of medieval military architecture.

The castle features thick stone walls, vaulted halls, underground passageways, and massive bastions offering panoramic views over the Dead Sea Valley and the King’s Highway. Its strategic location made it a vital stronghold for controlling caravan routes between Syria and Arabia. Visitors can explore its labyrinthine chambers, barracks, storerooms, and chapel, all of which tell stories of sieges, battles, and regional power shifts.

Today, Karak Castle is a popular destination for tourists and history lovers, offering a vivid window into the Crusader and Islamic military legacy of Jordan.
