A Weekend Full of Wonder: Our Family Adventure to Ajloun, Jordan

SHARE

Last weekend we packed up the car in Amman, full of excitement and a little too many snacks, ready for a family adventure in Ajloun — just a scenic drive northwest through rolling hills and olive groves. From the castle and cable car to forest trail and cosy cabin, our two kids had nonstop fun from start to finish!

Morning at the Majestic Ajloun Castle

Our first stop was the iconic Ajloun Castle, perched high on a hill with sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. The kids were thrilled to play “explorers” as we wandered through the ancient stone towers and corridors that once guarded this 12th-century fortress. It’s amazing to imagine what life was like here so long ago! Inside the castle, we even discovered a small archaeological museum with ancient artefacts. We took a walk around the castle, admiring its massive walls from every angle.

Soaring Views on the Ajloun Cable Car

Next up? A ride on the Ajloun cable car, which quickly became the kids’ favourite part of the day. We glided above lush forests and valleys, catching breathtaking views from high above. The cable car gives a unique perspective of the green hills stretching as far as the eye can see — and it was a calm, exciting moment that even the youngest loved. It was a refreshing way for all of us to enjoy the scenery without a long hike — and the kids kept scanning for donkeys and deer from the windows! The return tickets were 10 JOD per person, and we didn’t really have to wait in line.

A Peaceful Walk to Mar Elias Church

After lunch, we drove a short distance to the ancient Tell Mar Elias site — home to the historical church ruins dedicated to the Prophet Elias. The stone remains and quiet courtyards made for a reflective and curious stop. Wandering around these ruins gave us a sense of Jordan’s deep historical and religious heritage. The peaceful setting was ideal for photos and a little storytelling time about the landscape around us.

Adventure Time: Zip Line & Obstacle Course

Back closer to nature, the kids were thrilled with the outdoor activities at Ajloun Forest Reserve Zipline and other adventure games. Flying through the trees on a zip line brought squeals of joy (and just a few nervous giggles), and we even took turns on a fun obstacle course. It’s a great spot to burn energy and truly immerse in the forest atmosphere. Zip line ticket was 20 JOD per person, and the obstacle course was 10 JOD.

A Deeper Connection with Nature at Ajloun Forest Biosphere Reserve

The heart of our weekend — and the place where we truly slowed down — was the Ajloun Forest Biosphere Reserve. From the moment we entered, the air felt cooler, fresher, and wonderfully quiet, a welcome change from city life in Amman. Towering oak, pine, pistachio and wild strawberry trees surrounded us, and the kids immediately started pointing out birds, insects, and animal tracks along the path.

What makes this reserve special is that it protects one of Jordan’s last remaining Mediterranean forest ecosystems. It’s not just a place to visit; it feels like a living classroom. Along the trails, we talked with the kids about how forests help wildlife survive, protect soil, and keep the climate balanced — lessons that felt real because we were standing right inside that ecosystem.

We chose the Roe Deer Trail, which turned out to be perfect for a family hike. The trail is gentle, shaded, and just the right length for young walkers, with plenty of moments to stop, listen, and explore. Our kids loved imagining the shy roe deer moving quietly through the forest — and knowing that these animals were once nearly extinct in the area made the walk even more meaningful.

Every bend in the trail brought something new: sunlight filtering through leaves, distant birdsong, and views of rolling green hills that reminded us how surprisingly lush northern Jordan can be. Even when we didn’t spot deer, the sense that we were sharing their home made the hike feel special.

As evening approached, we headed to the Ajloun Cabins spread in proximity to the visitor centre. Staying overnight changed the experience completely. When the day visitors left, the forest grew quieter, and we felt fully immersed in nature. The cabin was cosy and comfortable, blending rustic charm with everything we needed for a relaxed family stay.

The dinner was served in the restaurant (part of the package we purchased), offering a simple yet delicious meal which was enjoyed by all of us after a full day of adventure. In the morning, waking up to birdsong and fresh forest air was magical. A short walk before breakfast felt like a gift — calm, slow, and uninterrupted.

Pro Tip: The only way to book and pay for the cabin is via the RSCN website. We picked the Orchid Cabin, but there were several options for all budgets and the number of people.

Final Thoughts

Our weekend trip to Ajloun was exactly the kind of family escape we had hoped for — balanced, adventurous, educational, and restful. The kids talked about the castle towers, cable car views, deer on the trail, and peaceful cabin sleep long after we returned to Amman. If you’re looking for a weekend that’s equal parts history, nature, and adventure, consider putting Ajloun on your list!
