What to See and Do at Azraq Wetland Reserve

SHARE

The Azraq Wetland Reserve, nestled in Jordan’s eastern desert, offers a unique oasis teeming with biodiversity and rich history. Established in 1978, this 12-square-kilometre reserve was once a vital stopover for migratory birds travelling between Africa and Eurasia. Despite challenges like water depletion, conservation efforts have revitalised parts of the wetland, attracting over 150 bird species, including hoopoe larks and marsh harriers. Visitors can explore the reserve via a 1.5 km boardwalk trail, leading through reed beds and offering glimpses of natural pools, mudflats, and diverse wildlife.

Beyond birdwatching, the reserve provides educational exhibits detailing its ecological significance and the challenges it faces. The nearby Azraq Castle, a historic fortress, adds a cultural dimension to the visit, reflecting the area’s strategic importance through the ages. For those seeking a deeper experience, guided tours offer insights into the reserve’s flora, fauna, and conservation initiatives.
