A Day at Black Iris Farm: A Family Adventure Through Nature and Play

Black Iris Farm

Visiting Black Iris Farm turned out to be one of those perfect family days where the kids are excited from the moment they hop out of the car until they fall asleep on the ride home. As a family of four with two energetic children, we’re always looking for places that blend learning, movement, and genuine fun — and Black Iris Farm delivered on all three.

First Impressions: A Cosy, Nature-Filled Escape

From the moment we stepped through the entrance, the kids were drawn to the open, farm-style setting. Instead of the typical city zoo layout, Black Iris feels more intimate and hands-on. The children rushed straight to the feeding stations, thrilled to offer carrots and greens to the deer and sunflower seeds to the monkeys. The animals here are used to families, so they approach gently and easily — something that instantly put our youngest at ease.

Hands-On Fun for Kids of All Ages

The highlight for both kids was the chance to interact with the parrots and smaller animals up close. Staff members were patient and friendly, guiding them on how to hold or feed animals safely. Watching our children confidently pet a phyton — or laugh as a llama tried to peek into our snack bag — made the experience feel personal and memorable. These are the moments that never happen in fenced-off, distant zoos.

Between animal encounters, the kids enjoyed running around the open spaces, taking photos with the colourful artwork and farm-themed corners, and exploring the shaded areas set up for families. The farm also offers snacks and drinks, which gave us a nice chance to take a breather while the kids compared their favourite animals of the day.

Parents’ Notes: Crowds, Enclosures, and Practical Tips

Of course, like many family attractions, Black Iris Farm can get busy on weekends, and some areas felt a bit crowded. Some animals are kept in enclosures that are smaller than we’d prefer — a reminder that this is more of an interactive farm-zoo rather than a wildlife sanctuary. Still, the environment felt safe, clean, and cared for, and the children were too enchanted to notice anything but the fun.

Pro Tip: If you can't visit during the weekdays, come on Friday at 10 AM by the time the farm opens, which will also allow you to avoid any traffic on the way from Amman. Hire a guide to learn about the animals, hear their stories, and get help with directions and animal encounters. Hold a real ostrich egg in your hands and you can even buy one for 50 JOD.

By the time we wrapped up our visit, our kids were already asking when they could come back. For families seeking a casual, engaging day outdoors — where children can connect with animals, explore nature, and enjoy simple, joyful moments — Black Iris Farm is a wonderful pick. It’s the kind of place that turns a normal weekend into a memory you’ll talk about for weeks.

Location, Access, Facilities and Fees

The farm is located close to the International Airport, approximately 35 km south of Amman, which takes about 30 minutes to reach. You can find it on Google Maps at this location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/CjhV4jEeK7jVve9y7

In addition to the animal enclosures, the farm includes open spaces for strolling or letting children roam, and there are shaded and seating areas for resting — making it easier for families to spend several hours in comfort.  For convenience, there’s also a cafeteria, a grocery store and restrooms.

There is free parking next to the farm, and the entrance tickets cost 4 JOD. You can also purchase carrots, greens and other foods to feed the animals for 1-2 JOD.

The Black Iris Farm is open daily from 10 AM to 8 PM (9 PM on Fridays) and can be visited without a prior reservation.
