Karak Castle’s Upper Court: Great Hall, Church, and Mamluk Palace

SHARE

Karak Castle (Al‑Karak) is a vast and imposing Crusader fortress perched 900 m above sea level, featuring a labyrinth of vaulted halls, passageways, and defensive chambers. Upon entering via the Ottoman Gate, you first encounter the Lower Court—home to a ticket office, visitor center, and small museum. Here, you can explore former stables, barrack rooms, and storage areas, including remnants of the Market Hall and prison cells . With a torch in hand, descend into the darker recesses: the castle’s extensive network of subterranean tunnels, dungeons, and secret escape routes (like the famed “Tunnel of Saladin”) offers an eerie glimpse into medieval military ingenuity.

Ascending to the Upper Court, you’ll find grand Crusader-era structures and later Mamluk additions. Highlights include the Great Hall and the small Romanesque Church of St. John, modest yet atmospheric, as well as the atmospheric Mamluk keep and palace complex featuring barrel-vaulted chambers and a mosque with a mihrab . Don’t miss the large communal kitchen—complete with olive-grinding stones and a massive bread oven—and the crenelated walls and towers, which offer spectacular views over Wadi al‑Karak, the Dead Sea, and the rugged landscape beyond . A visit to the castle’s semi-subterranean Archaeological Museum brings the area’s long habitation to life with artifacts from Moabite, Nabataean, Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic eras.
